A hidden camera captured a surprising encounter between a coati (scientific name: Nasua narica) and an ocelot (scientific name: Leopardus pardalis) in a forest in Costa Rica.
The ocelot lunged inside to take down its prey.
The coati, while searching for shelter, crawled into a box created by conservationists from the Osa Project (Costa Rica) to provide wildlife with a place to stay. Unfortunately for the coati, an ocelot was nearby.
The ocelot caught the scent of its prey and positioned itself at the entrance of the box just as the coati attempted to exit. The ocelot lunged inside to take down the coati, and moments later, the victim was dragged out with a fatal bite to the throat.
Coatis are one of the favorite prey of ocelots. Despite being of similar size, the ocelot’s hunting skills completely overshadow those of the coati, allowing it to overpower and kill its victim in mere moments.
