The first Boer goat in the world born through parthenogenesis from an oocyte was delivered on November 2nd in Tianjin, China.
The kid was born at 9:05 AM on November 2nd at the Tianjin Veterinary Research Institute, an organization that began its parthenogenesis project in 2002.
Ding Boliang, the head of the institute, stated: “The birth of this parthenogenetic kid lays a solid foundation for us to explore parthenogenesis techniques in the future, aimed at improving animal husbandry, biomedical technology, and pharmaceuticals.” His organization has introduced over 300 purebred Boer goats into the parthenogenesis program since 2002 and has since developed a genetic database for the species.
The Boer goat, a breed originating from South Africa, grows rapidly and yields more meat than conventional goats or sheep. An adult Boer goat weighs around 100 kilograms and can provide over 40 kilograms of meat.
