According to the researchers, these foods are classified as having a low glycemic index (GI). The GI index indicates how quickly or slowly the energy from sugar in a person’s blood is released.
For example, foods with a high GI, such as croissants, white bread, or corn cakes, will cause blood sugar levels to spike quickly, leading to faster absorption by the body.
In contrast, foods with a low GI will be absorbed into the body more slowly, which helps children stay full longer and snack less.
Ms. Janet M. Warren, a member of the research team, stated: “It cannot be definitively concluded that we should eliminate high GI foods from children’s breakfast menus. However, studying low GI foods opens up possibilities for creating a balanced diet to combat the rising obesity rates among children in many countries.”
