The Hunter’s Moon will rise on October 17 and will be the closest supermoon to Earth this year. What is the best time to view this supermoon when it is the brightest?
This year’s Hunter’s Moon is the third supermoon of the year, occurring on October 17 when the Moon is approximately 357,364 km away from Earth. The peak fullness of this full moon will occur at 6:26 PM on October 17 (Vietnam time).

The full moon will rise from the east. We can see it positioned within the constellation Pisces. One day before and after this date, the Hunter’s Moon will also appear very bright and round.
When it begins to rise, it will be located roughly between Saturn and Jupiter. Saturn will be positioned to the upper right of the Moon, while Jupiter will rise about an hour after the full moon, located to the lower left of the Moon. For the three nights following this event, the Moon will rise simultaneously with Jupiter.
October’s full moon is commonly referred to as the Hunter’s Moon because its appearance historically signaled hunters to prepare for the upcoming winter. Additionally, it is also known as the Falling Leaves Moon and the Blood Moon (though this is not the same as the Blood Moon that occurs during a total lunar eclipse).
The Hunter’s Moon is also the first full moon following the Autumn Equinox on September 22. The next full moon will occur on November 15 and is known as the Beaver Moon, Frog Moon, or Frost Moon. This will be the fourth and final supermoon of 2024.
