Westerners fear the number 666 because they believe it is a terrifying mark of Satan. This fear is not limited to Western countries; several other nations around the world also harbor a deep-seated anxiety regarding the number 666.
Many people believe that June 6, 2006, was the day of Satan’s appearance and that disasters would ensue. Rumors about that dreadful day spread like wildfire, akin to the Day of Judgment. Fortunately, no significant tragedy occurred that day; however, the speculations and anxieties about disasters on the date 666 resurfaced on June 6, 2016.
Some believe that the number 666 is the mark of Satan and only brings bad omens and disasters to humanity.
The dreaded number appears in the final book of the New Testament, also known as the Book of Revelation. It is considered the embodiment of Satan. Thus, the number 666 symbolizes imperfection, in contrast to the number 7, which is the mark of God. The numbers of God are deemed perfect because a week consists of 7 days, 7 tongues of fire, 7 spirits…
Moreover, 666 is also regarded as a symbol of an attack against Jesus Christ. In Greek, the name “Christ,” when written by hand, resembles sharp objects or arrows. It is seen as a weapon against God.
Additionally, the number 666 is believed to embody the serpent of Satan—the creature that tempted Adam and Eve to eat the forbidden fruit. Because these two earthly beings secretly indulged in the forbidden fruit, God became angry and expelled them from the Garden of Eden, banishing man to Earth. Therefore, it is thought that the number 666 symbolizes temptation, leading humanity astray and causing them to make grave mistakes that are hard to rectify.
According to another ancient legend, adding the three sixes produces a remarkable result: 6+6+6 = 18. The number 18 symbolizes 18 virgins, also known as angelic virgins, who are offered in sacrifices to Satan. Believers in this legend assert that if they find enough virgins and perform the sacrifices correctly, Satan will return from hell.
Many people often avoid days that fall on the 666 cycle for fear of Satan.
However, some argue that the number 666 is not the embodiment of Satan but rather the number 616. Scientists discovered a collection of ancient documents in Egypt, which included the oldest manuscript of the Book of Revelation indicating that 616 is indeed the number of Satan. Over time, the reason for this change remains unclear.
Nonetheless, people still believe that 666 is the number of Satan because it appears more mysterious, intriguing, and easier to remember than 616.
Professor of anthropology at Phillips Stevens Jr. University of Science and Fine Arts stated: “Revelation is a complex and difficult book. Scholars have found many “demons” appearing in chapter 13 and many other chapters of that ancient book.”
The professor also noted that this is merely a form of superstition and that there is no actual number of the devil. The terms referring to demons in the Book of Revelation mention many different types of demons, not just Satan.
Due to its mysterious nature, some people believe in it while others consider it a mere hoax. Those who believe often avoid days that fall on the 666 cycle or refrain from choosing those numbers for house numbers, license plates, etc. Some even avoid giving birth on those days for fear of having a child who is the embodiment of the devil.
Some individuals even try to evade the number 666 as a way to escape superstition. The fear of this number is known as hexakosioihexekontahexaphobia.
In November 2013, Codie Thacker, a cross-country athlete at Whitley County High School in Kentucky, USA, refused to participate in the national championship simply because his number was 666.
Amtrak’s Siemens ACS-64 locomotives are numbered from 600 to 665 and 667 to 670, skipping the number 666.
Semiconductor processors produced in the early days of personal computers also avoided the number 666. During the advancement of processing speed development, many processors (such as Intel Pentium III) were rated at 667 MHz instead of the usual specification of 666 MHz.
Notably, a famous structure in Egypt is also considered the embodiment of Satan because it shares similarities with the number 666. This is the Louvre Glass Pyramid. Rumors suggest that this structure was built for the devil as it consists of 666 glass panes.
Louvre Glass Pyramid.
This intriguing story emerged in the 1980s. However, the Louvre Museum’s leadership affirmed that the pyramid has no connection to the number 666. In fact, it is composed of 673 glass panels, including 603 diamond-shaped panes and 70 triangular panes.
Nevertheless, many still believe in the hypothesis that the number of Satan “appears” in the Louvre Glass Pyramid. They argue that if you take the official number 673, add the large Pyramid’s door, add 112 panes of the inverted pyramid, and then subtract the 120 panes of the two smaller pyramids within it, the result is still 666 (673 + 112 – 120 = 666).
The story didn’t stop there; it “resurfaced” in 2003 when the famous author Dan Brown wrote in his globally renowned novel The Da Vinci Code with quite a “sensitive” content. In it, the protagonist Robert Langdon claims: “This pyramid was constructed from exactly 666 glass panes, at the bizarre request of the best president of the Fifth Republic of France, Francois Mitterrand.” Consequently, the topic of the devil’s number once again stirred public interest for a period.
Many people believe that humanity was fortunate when disaster did not strike on June 6, 2006, as the probability calculated based on the 666-day cycle was unfavorable. Meanwhile, there have been several horrific events in human history that coincided precisely with the 666-day cycle.
Specifically, if we calculate from August 1, 1914 – the moment World War I broke out, several significant events occurred worldwide within a few weeks’ variance. If we take 5 x 666, we arrive at September 1923. At that time, a powerful earthquake measuring 8.9 on the Richter scale devastated a large area in Tokyo, Japan, occurring on September 1.
If we take 11 x 666, we reach December 1941. Historically, Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, causing severe damage to the U.S. Navy on December 7, 1941. This event marked the moment the United States officially entered World War II.
If we take 17 x 666, we arrive at August 1945. On August 6, the United States dropped an atomic bomb on the city of Hiroshima, marking the first nuclear disaster in history.
If we take 34 x 666, we reach August 1976. This period marked the outbreak of a series of disasters, including the Ebola virus in Africa and the largest earthquake of the century in China, which occurred on July 28.
In the natural world, there are also notable occurrences of the number 666, such as in carbon atoms, the basic component of life, which contains 6 protons, 6 neutrons, and 6 electrons, or C6H6O6, which is also a highly toxic substance.
Former U.S. President Ronald Reagan and his wife, Nancy, believed in the misfortune associated with the number 666. Their home in California was numbered 666. Upon retirement, the Reagans requested the government to change it to 668. This superstition may stem from the fact that his full name is Ronald Wilson Reagan, with each part of his name containing 6 letters!
