Amou Haji Passes Away at 94, Just Months After Bathing for the First Time in Decades.
According to Iran’s IRNA news agency, Haji was a hermit in Iran, nicknamed “the world’s dirtiest man.” He passed away on October 23 in the village of Dejgah, Fars province, southern Iran.

Local media report that Haji lived in a hut made of earth and stone and had not bathed with water or soap for over 60 years. Residents of Dejgah stated that Haji experienced a romantic setback in his youth, leading him to decide against bathing. His entire body was covered in soot.
In 2004, The Tehran Times reported that Haji consumed the carcasses of dead animals found on the road, smoked a pipe filled with animal feces, and believed he would fall ill if he ate clean food.
A few months ago, the villagers of Dejgah convinced Haji to bathe for the first time, and he agreed. However, just months later, Haji passed away.
In 2009, The Hindustan Times also wrote about a man named Kailash “Kalau” Singh who had not bathed for over 30 years in a village on the outskirts of Varanasi, India. Each evening when the villagers gathered, Kalau would light a fire, smoke marijuana, and stand on one leg to pray.
“It’s like using water to bathe. Bathing with fire helps eliminate all bacteria and infections in the body,” Kalau explained.
