Dylan Phillips, a mechanic from Pembrokeshire, England, has recently set a new Guinness World Record for the fastest go-kart in the world. The go-kart he built reached an astonishing speed of 84 km/h, surpassing the previous record.
The story began with a bold idea during a conversation at a pub. Phillips, who has a passion for building things, decided to turn this crazy idea into reality. He started tinkering with the go-kart in his garage in Crymych, Pembrokeshire. After some time, a prototype was completed and achieved a speed of 59.5 km/h during its first test run. At that time, the world record for go-kart speed stood at 74 km/h, and Phillips was determined to conquer this challenge.
Dylan Phillips’s super-fast go-kart.
The idea of creating this “super-fast” go-kart emerged during a chat at the bar. Initially, it was just seen as a bold project for fun. However, 38-year-old Phillips turned this idea into reality.
“At first, I just wanted to build the go-kart for fun, but after reaching a speed of 59.5 km/h, I wondered if anyone had ever set a speed record for go-karts,” Phillips shared. “I researched and found that the current record was 74 km/h. So, I was determined to break it with the ‘monster’ I created.”
Phillips continued to refine the go-kart and participated in the Straightliners Speed Week 2024 at Elvington Airfield, Yorkshire. After two trial runs on the 100-meter track, he officially broke the record with a speed of 84 km/h.

The previous record was recorded at a speed of 74 km/h. Phillips believed he could surpass this figure. After further improvements, he brought the go-kart to the Straightliners Speed Week 2024 at Elvington Airfield in Yorkshire to challenge the record. After two runs on the 100-meter track, he officially broke the old record with a speed of 84 km/h.
While this speed may not be particularly impressive for cars or motorcycles, it is an extraordinary and dangerous achievement for a go-kart that lacks a suspension system and only has front brakes.
“The driving experience is very uncomfortable and frightening,” Phillips shared. “The biggest issue is the brakes, as the go-kart only has front brakes. Fortunately, I’ve never had an accident, but it truly is an experience that leaves you sore after each ride due to the lack of suspension and severe shaking.”
Technical details about this “super-fast” go-kart have not been disclosed.
Phillips’s record was confirmed by Guinness World Records in May of this year. However, the technical details of his “super-fast” go-kart have not yet been revealed.
Dylan Phillips’s record is a testament to creativity, passion, and the spirit of innovation. His story inspires those who are passionate about building and wish to conquer seemingly impossible challenges.
