Via Technologies has launched a new chipset that promises to revolutionize and miniaturize personal computers.
The manufacturer states that the VX700 chipset enables computer manufacturers to create machines that are 40% smaller than the ultra-thin and lightweight Ultra Mobile PCs (UMPCs).
Designed specifically for ultra-thin and lightweight computers as well as mobile devices, the VX700 represents a breakthrough by integrating several functions of traditional motherboards into a compact chip measuring just 35 x 35mm.
The integrated features include a graphics processing engine, wide bandwidth memory, high-quality audio, and the capability to handle information from 6 USB 2.0 ports and 4 PCI slots.
This new chipset from Via can be applied in upcoming versions of UMPCs. Although UMPCs have officially entered the market, consumer interest in this product type has been lukewarm.
But what if UMPCs become even more compact? Will they meet the expectations of manufacturers and consumers as a new form of computer that combines the functionality and portability of a PDA with that of a laptop?
The concept of UMPCs is very significant, according to analyst Nitin Gupta. “However, at the current price and form factor, this product category can attract very little consumer attention.”
UMPCs are now emerging as devices that could encroach upon the smartphone and laptop markets in terms of mobile computing demand. In terms of entertainment, it seems that this product line has not yet gained an advantage over products specifically designed for entertainment purposes.
