Despite the authorities deploying 3 planes, 5 helicopters, over 200 firefighters, and 40 fire trucks to manage the situation, firefighting efforts have faced significant challenges due to high temperatures combined with strong winds.
Despite numerous efforts, the fire has continued to spread, forcing many tourists and residents on the island to evacuate for safety.
It is reported that tourists and residents have been forced to take refuge in a sports hall on Rhodes.
These individuals are finding various ways to pass the time, such as reading books, chatting, sleeping, and playing cards.
Meanwhile, many people are stranded at the airport waiting to return to their home countries.
Describing the evacuation from the fire, a British tourist stated it felt like “the apocalypse.”
Towels or suitcases were used as makeshift “beds.”
Families with young children are anxiously waiting to board flights.
Everywhere from the floor to the baggage claim area was utilized as a place to rest.
According to reports from the Greek government, over 19,000 people have been evacuated from Rhodes. They described the large wildfires as covering the sky and creating “a chaotic scene.”
