The Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) satellite, launched by the U.S. space agency NASA, successfully entered the orbit of the Red Planet on March 10.
MRO will undertake a two-year mission to identify safe landing sites for future missions and search for evidence of past water flow on the planet’s surface. It will also monitor the Martian surface (dust, water, temperature, etc.) and atmosphere in unprecedented detail.
Launched on August 12, 2005, MRO is equipped with a $31 million camera system capable of capturing sharp images of small objects, such as a coffee table, on Mars.
