The greatest threat to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Delos is the phenomenon of saltwater intrusion, where rising seawater erodes the foundations of ancient structures, causing them to gradually collapse.
On the serene island of Delos, the majestic ruins of ancient Greek and Roman civilization are facing the risk of being erased due to climate change.
Located not far from Mykonos, the World Heritage site of Delos is slowly sinking into the Aegean Sea, as recognized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

This site was once one of the most important archaeological sites of ancient Greek and Roman civilization, featuring 2,000-year-old structures that provide a unique glimpse into the daily lives of ancient people.
However, scientists warn that rising sea levels due to climate change could lead to the complete disappearance of Delos within just a few decades.
Ms. Veronique Chankowski, head of the French School of Archaeology at Athens (EFA), stated that the Delos site is very likely to be submerged in the Aegean Sea within the next 50 years.
The primary threat to Delos is saltwater intrusion, which erodes the foundations of ancient structures, leading to their gradual collapse.
This situation worsens in winter when fierce waves crash into coastal areas.
Ms. Chankowski mentioned that sea levels have risen by up to 20 meters in some areas of the island over the past decade, exacerbating the situation.
To protect Delos, some wooden supports have been deployed to help prevent certain walls that are experiencing erosion from collapsing.
However, this is only a temporary solution, and authorities need to research more sustainable and comprehensive measures.
A study from Aristotle University in Thessaloniki, Greece, indicates that increased temperatures and humidity could alter the chemical composition of materials used in cultural heritage sites.
Additionally, tourism activities during the summer months pose another challenge due to the lack of awareness among visitors.
In light of this situation, archaeologist Athena-Christiana Loupou has called for urgent action to protect this valuable heritage.
