There are many claims that adding honey to hot drinks can create toxic substances harmful to the body. So, is this accurate?
Honey is one of the familiar foods widely used by many people. It contains numerous essential nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and antioxidants, which can provide various health benefits.
The temperature of hot water can destroy beneficial enzymes, vitamins, and minerals in honey.
Regarding the claim that adding honey to hot water creates toxic substances harmful to the body, Dr. Saurabh Sethi, a gastroenterologist in California, USA, affirms that this information is completely incorrect.
Sharing on his TikTok channel @doctorsethimd, the expert explains: “Adding honey to hot water or hot beverages like tea or coffee only reduces the nutritional value of honey but does not create toxins. This is because the temperature of hot water can destroy beneficial enzymes, vitamins, and minerals present in honey.”
Dr. Sethi advises: “People should avoid using boiling water or overly hot tea to mix with honey. Instead, wait for the water or tea to cool down before adding honey.”
Mixing honey with warm water will help retain the maximum nutrients found in honey and provide more health benefits.
