When discussing the incorruptible and upright officials in Chinese history, one cannot forget Bao Gong.
Bao Gong, whose real name is Bao Zheng, is also known as Bao Qing Tian. He was an official during the Song Dynasty. From the moment he entered the civil service, he gained fame for his filial piety by requesting to delay his official duties in order to take care of his elderly parents at home.
Bao Gong is famous as a god-like investigator, incorruptible and upright.
When he became the magistrate of Duan Prefecture (now in Guangdong), his reputation only grew. Local officials exploited the residents by charging excessive taxes on ink and brush workshops for their own gain. However, it is said that throughout his tenure there, Bao Gong never brought a single inkstone home.
Throughout his life, Bao Gong solved many complex cases, including those involving powerful individuals and royalty, yet he never showed favoritism, adhering strictly to the law. This aspect of his character further earned him the respect of the people.
Regarding whether Bao Gong was truly an incorruptible official in history, historians have differing opinions. Experts must not only study original historical documents but also consider archaeological discoveries, which can provide significant insights.
Excavating Bao Gong’s Tomb: Unraveling the Mystery
In the 1970s, historical experts undertook the task of cleaning and exploring Bao Gong’s tomb. The size of his tomb was indeed impressive, which is entirely understandable given his renowned status.

Experts also discovered that the tomb had been broken into by thieves, which was quite disappointing. However, as they delved deeper into the tomb, they found a crucial piece of evidence.
The grave robber had left behind an inscription in Bao Gong’s tomb: “Bao Gong is incorruptible; this person has admired him all his life.”
Although it is unclear exactly what the grave robber took from this tomb or what Bao Gong was buried with, the robber’s words alone are enough to validate his reputation for integrity.

Experts believe that due to his lifelong integrity, there were no valuable possessions buried with him at his death, unlike many officials and nobles of his time, which led the robber to hold him in high esteem.
