The UK Home Office announced on July 25 its commitment to implement electronic border control measures through the “eBorders” system, designed to monitor the entry and exit of approximately 90 million individuals each year.
Initially, the “eBorders” program will be installed at all entry points along the UK border over the next eight years, starting with routes considered to have the “highest risk” in order to prevent illegal immigration and to track individuals who have overstayed their visas in the UK.
The “eBorders” system, which utilizes modern technology, is set to begin implementation in 2008; however, it will take an additional six years before it is fully operational.
