The two-person crew aboard the International Space Station (ISS) will conduct a spacewalk lasting 5 hours and 30 minutes today.
Astronaut Bill McArthur from the United States, along with Russian cosmonaut Valery Tokarev, will be installing a new camera and replacing a malfunctioning old one. This equipment is essential for monitoring the environment outside the space station.
Currently, the International Space Station is operating with a reduced crew since the tragic incident involving the U.S. Space Shuttle Columbia, which disintegrated upon re-entering Earth’s atmosphere due to debris striking the shuttle during launch.
This accident led to the suspension of all Space Shuttle flights until the Discovery mission visited the International Space Station last July. However, the Space Shuttle program was again ordered to halt flights due to ongoing issues with debris during launches.
