And they have lived this way for centuries.
The small town of Setenil de las Bodegas is located in Spain and is home to about 3,000 residents, all of whom share a common trait: they live right beneath a massive rock. The locals have utilized the natural overhang of the rock face to construct their homes.

Located in the northeastern part of Cádiz province, this town is built along a narrow gorge that has been eroded by the Rio Trejo river. Many visitors wonder why the locals are willing to live under such a massive stone, and the reason is quite logical, tied to their long-standing traditions.

Many houses here are built directly into the rock face, allowing residents to avoid constructing entire homes like in other places. They literally live in caves, which helps them evade the extreme weather conditions that sweep through the country.
This gigantic rock serves as a natural awning, preventing temperatures from penetrating too deeply into the air below, keeping the homes cool in the summer and warm in the winter.

The name of this town is also linked to two historical events. The term “Setenil” is derived from Latin, meaning “seven times defeated.” In the 15th century, this area was occupied by Moors from Africa, and the Crown lost seven times in attempts to reclaim the land from the Moors, finally succeeding in 1485.
The name “de las Bodegas” was added in more recent centuries, either to commemorate vineyards destroyed by pests or to refer to the caves that facilitated the city’s production activities.
