Corals are marine animals that exist in the form of small polyp-like structures similar to sea anemones, typically living in colonies made up of genetically identical individuals.
On April 15, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) warned that the world is experiencing the second-largest coral bleaching event in the past decade, with coral reefs stretching from Australia to Florida facing a disaster after months of record heat in the oceans.
This current bleaching event is the fourth recorded, following previous events in 1998, 2010, and 2016.
Expert Derek Manzello from NOAA stated: “As the world’s oceans continue to warm, coral bleaching is becoming more frequent and severe. When this situation becomes severe or prolonged, it can lead to coral death, causing harm to those who rely on reefs for their livelihoods.”
