“Forever chemicals” are per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) that provide water, stain, grease, and dirt resistance. They are found in countless everyday products ranging from cookware, medical devices, cosmetics, to pizza boxes.
Governments around the world are facing increasing pressure to restrict PFAS due to growing evidence linking these substances to cancer, birth defects, and adverse effects on the immune systems of both humans and animals.
In April 2024, scientists published a study revealing dangerous concentrations of “forever chemicals” in surface water and groundwater globally, with Australia, the United States, and Europe identified as pollution hotspots.
How to Avoid Exposure to Forever Chemicals?
The answer is that it is very difficult. We currently have no way to completely avoid them, and we often do not know which products contain PFAS.
This issue requires collaboration from government levels down to local communities. Each country needs to establish new regulations to limit the maximum levels or set specific quotas for using these chemicals in industrial production.
For the general public, awareness of forever chemicals needs to be raised, and lifestyle changes should be implemented to minimize exposure to PFAS through simple actions: do not drink untreated water, avoid using stain-resistant carpets and mattresses, and waterproof sprays.
Replace all non-stick cookware with products made from cast iron, stainless steel, glass, or enamel. Check labels to identify polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) or other “fluoro” components and avoid those ingredients.
Limit the use of food packaging paper, foam plastic containers for fast food, and other food wrap materials.
Avoid cosmetics and personal care products marketed as “long-lasting, deep-absorbing” as they may also contain PFAS.
