Journalists focused on technology, science, and health from Time magazine have announced that the successful cloning of the dog Snuppy is the most remarkable invention of 2005. This award is presented annually and, according to Time, it is expected to have a significant impact.
The five-month-old Afghan hound was successfully cloned by a research team led by Professor Woo Suk Hwang. The technique employed by the South Korean scientists to clone Snuppy is similar to the method used by British scientists to clone Dolly the sheep, the first cloned animal in the world.
This time, the scientists extracted a cell sample from the ear of an adult Afghan dog to create Snuppy. Currently, South Korea is quite advanced in the field of cloning technology and stem cells. Last month, the country opened the world’s first stem cell bank, clearly demonstrating its ambition to become a global center for stem cell research.
