Chinese search giant Baidu is set to collaborate with Intel’s branch in the country to develop Internet applications for desktops, mobile phones, and various electronic devices.
The agreement with Intel will enable Baidu’s search services to extend beyond PCs into mobile phones and home electronics.
Baidu announced that both parties have signed a memorandum of understanding, under which Baidu will optimize search applications for Intel products. Currently, Intel serves as the server provider for Baidu.
Users will soon be able to access China’s leading search service not only from computers but also from mobile phones, PDAs, and their networked home electronic devices.
Despite fierce competition from global search giants like Google and Yahoo, Baidu, a Chinese-language search service, has been steadily rising in prominence. At one point, Baidu even surpassed Google in popularity and usage within China, thanks to its services and search features tailored to the preferences of local users.
In this partnership with Intel, both sides are expected to reap significant benefits. While Baidu will enhance its position and reputation, Intel’s initiative to bring digital tradition into every home will receive a substantial boost.
“Baidu is the most frequently used search engine in China, with an exceptionally large user base. The substantial traffic demands a very stable server infrastructure with top performance,” stated Thomas Kilroy, vice president of Intel.
Simultaneously, in Taiwan, Intel is also partnering with electronics companies on a campaign to produce affordable, standard-configured notebooks.
