Taiwanese laptop manufacturers have recently released statistics indicating that the top five laptop manufacturers in the world today—Dell, HP, Acer, Toshiba, and Lenovo—are expected to capture up to 70.5% of the global laptop market share by 2006, up from 60.1% in 2005.
By 2007, these five giants will hold approximately 87% of the global laptop market share, producing a total of 55 million units, compared to just 29.45 million units in 2004.
Dell has ascended to the throne of the global laptop market and is poised to maintain this position through the end of 2006. HP consistently outperformed Dell from 2001 to 2003. Dell plans to manufacture between 14 to 15 million laptops in 2006, followed by HP with around 12 to 13 million units, Acer with 11 million, Toshiba with 8.5 to 9 million, and Lenovo with 8 to 8.5 million units.
The Taiwanese laptop market is expected to continue its optimistic growth as these five major companies have chosen Taiwan as their launchpad to penetrate other Asian markets. However, if they become complacent, one of these top five companies could be pushed out of the ranking due to fierce competition from other new entrants in the laptop market. Intel will be their most formidable competitor, having formed alliances with major manufacturers such as Quanta Computer, Compal Electronics, Asustek Computer, and Synnex Technology International.
