This move aims to capture more market share amidst a growing demand for small-sized memory cards, according to the Nihon Keizai newspaper.
The report indicates that Toshiba plans to produce between 3 to 4 million memory cards each month. Measuring 15x11x1 mm, the microSD card is only a quarter the size of the miniSD card, which is commonly used in mobile phones today.
Currently, Toshiba has not commented on the information published by Nihon.
MicroSD cards began production last fall; however, unlike other SD card manufacturers (including Matsushita), Toshiba has only released small batches.
The reason for this cautious approach is the high production costs and the rarity of devices compatible with this ultra-mini card type.
A 1 GB microSD card retails for around 10,000 yen (approximately $85), and Toshiba plans to launch a 2 GB version next year. A 2 GB card can store up to 500 MP3 songs.
