Thai scientists have recently identified the gene responsible for the fragrant aroma of rice. They have quickly applied for a patent to protect this discovery.
According to Dr. Apichart Wannavijitr, the director of Thailand’s rice gene project, his team discovered a gene mutation that creates the fragrant aroma of jasmine rice. This mutation occurs in one of the genes responsible for the rice’s scent. Out of a total of 50,000 genes in jasmine rice, there are 8 inactive genetic traits.
In their experiments, the team successfully transformed ordinary Japanese rice into fragrant rice. This technique can also be applied to modify other crops, including wheat, corn, and soybeans.
Due to concerns that other rice-producing countries might also use this technology, the research team has sought a patent. The goal is to protect Thailand’s jasmine rice industry, which provides jobs for 20 million workers and generates over 30 million dollars in annual export revenue.
