Ostrog is a monastery of the Serbian Orthodox Church, uniquely situated against a steep cliff on the large Ostroška Greda mountain in Montenegro.
The monastery is dedicated to Saint Basil of Ostrog, Sveti Vasilije Ostroški, who founded the monastery and was buried here in 1671.
From the monastery, one can enjoy panoramic views of the lush Bjelopavlići plain below.
This is the most famous pilgrimage site in Montenegro and one of the most important Orthodox Christian shrines in the world…
…It also welcomes visitors from both Orthodox Christianity, Catholicism, and Islam.
The Ostrog Monastery is located at an altitude of 900 meters above sea level. To the right at the exit, there is a Holy Spring, believed to have healing properties.
The Upper Monastery is home to the Church of the Holy Blessing and the Church of the Cross. The relics of Saint Basil are also housed in this church.
The Lower Monastery Donji Manastir is located 3 km from the main complex, centered around the Church of the Holy Trinity, adorned with vibrant frescoes – built in 1824.
Between the Upper and Lower Monasteries, there is the Church of the Martyr Stanko – built in 2003, which also houses the hand of this saint.
The monastery celebrates its feast day annually on May 12, the day Saint Basil passed away, which coincides with April 29 on the Orthodox calendar.
Not only does Ostrog contain captivating legendary stories, but it also boasts unique, stunning architecture set amidst pristine nature.
