A German pharmaceutical company has just launched a special sipping straw that helps children take medicine “deliciously,” even with bitter antibiotics.
The Clarosip straw helps children “enjoy” taking the antibiotic clarithromycin. |
The straw contains a remarkable antibiotic called Clarosip from Grunenthal. It can be used with various beverages, including cola, at different temperatures. Clarosip also features a filter device that signals when the entire dose of medicine has been consumed.
Statistics show that millions of doses of medicine are wasted worldwide each year, with one common reason being patients’ reluctance to take it due to unpleasant smells and tastes. Many parents experience a “torture” every time they try to convince their children to take bitter medicine, especially when using a spoon. The introduction of the Clarosip product aims to address this issue.
Typically, the antibiotic clarithromycin has a tasteless coating that makes it easier for individuals to take because they do not immediately recognize the taste of the medicine. This coating quickly dissolves in the stomach. However, when taking the medicine, if a child does not swallow it right away, the coating will break down in the mouth, and the child will immediately taste the bitterness of the medicine. Grunenthal has innovatively designed the straw to contain and release clarithromycin with a neutral flavor, making it unnoticeable to children in their favorite drinks.
It is important to note that children need to drink at least half a cup of water at a time to ensure that all the small medicine particles are swallowed. The Clarosip straw should not be used with whole fruit juices, such as freshly squeezed orange juice containing pulp.
