Mice possess the ability to smell in a manner similar to stereo sound processing, giving them unique advantages in their lives.
Scientists in India have discovered that 90% of the neurons in a mouse’s brain have the capacity to detect smells from the left and right sides differently.
The scientific journal *Science* published an article on this topic in its latest issue.
Due to their ‘stereo-smelling’ ability, mice can identify the location of a scent source with just one or two sniffs.
Researcher Raghav Rajan from the Agricultural University in Bangalore wrote in the article in *Science* about how mice identify smells similarly to stereo-based location recognition.
The experiments conducted by the research team also revealed that mice can recognize scents with an accuracy of up to 50 millionths of a second.
The researchers also stated that because mice can detect scents in a stereo manner, this strength has been advantageous in their evolutionary process, allowing them to pinpoint the location of food sources and quickly identify potential threats.
