The clean energy company Eco Wave Power (EWP) signed an agreement with Ordu Enerji to build the world’s largest wave power plant, according to an announcement on December 8 by EWP. Established in Tel Aviv, Israel, in 2011, EWP develops and patents smart, cost-effective technology to convert ocean wave energy into electricity.
Under the agreement, Ordu Enerji will provide nine wave barriers suitable for Eco Wave Power over a period of 25 years from the activation of the pilot model to the production plant, while Eco Wave Power will be responsible for the construction and operation of the power plant.
The project will begin with a 4 MW pilot model at Ordu Port. Following this, EWP will proceed to construct the 77 MW plant, which will include a series of fixed steel buoys in a modular format connected to arms equipped with pistons. These arms will pump a fluid through undersea pipelines to a generator onshore to produce sustainable energy. The project costs $150 million, but EWP has not disclosed the completion timeline.
“With the goal of building a self-sufficient power network in the region, EWP is seen as a vital resource to realize the potential of producing 100% clean energy,” said Mustafa Kemal Macit, CEO of Ordu Enerji. “Ordu Province is looking to harness the infinite energy from ocean waves to supply the power grid. This project demonstrates Ordu Enerji’s commitment to investing in advanced clean energy technology.”
According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, the annual potential energy of ocean waves off the coast is estimated to reach 2.64 trillion kilowatt-hours, equivalent to about 64% of the electricity generated in the U.S. in 2019. Meanwhile, the Ocean Energy Europe association reports that 100 GW of wave power capacity could be installed in Europe by 2050, meeting 10% of the electricity demand of the countries. Wave power projects will significantly contribute to reducing global carbon emissions.
