While leveling land to build a river embankment, two men in Đông Hà City (Quảng Trị) discovered a jar of coins weighing 27 kg. Authorities have estimated the value of this coin hoard to be approximately 97 million VND.
On December 1, the Quảng Trị Department of Culture, Sports, and Tourism submitted a proposal to the provincial People’s Committee, recommending a reward for the residents of Ward 4, Đông Hà City, for their efforts in discovering, salvaging, and handing over an ancient jar of coins valued at over 97 million VND.
The ancient jar of coins weighs 27 kg.
According to Decree 29/2018/NĐ-CP, the reward amount is over 14.5 million VND.
Previously, in August, while leveling land to construct the Hiếu River embankment in Ward 4, Đông Hà City, Mr. Nguyễn Đình Vương and Mr. Nguyễn Quốc Trị discovered a broken ceramic jar containing many ancient coins.
Subsequently, Mr. Trị took the jar home for safekeeping and then handed it over to the Quảng Trị Heritage Management and Museum Center.
The coin hoard weighs 27 kg, including a large clump weighing 13 kg, with the remainder consisting of loose and smaller clumped coins. Through the identifiable loose coins, conservators were able to date the coins.
This ancient jar of coins holds historical, cultural, and scientific significance, reflecting the trade activities in the Quảng Trị region during the 17th and 18th centuries.
Most of the coins are nearly the same size, round, flat, with a square hole in the center, and two raised edges surrounding both the inner and outer circles. The coins maintain their original shape, although some have oxidized, causing the inscriptions to fade.
These coins are currently being preserved and documented by the Quảng Trị Museum.
According to the Quảng Trị Provincial Museum, most of these coins originated from China, including: the Huang Song Tong Bao coins from the Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127), the Xuan Hua Tong Bao from the Northern Song Dynasty (1119-1126), the Dai Ding Tong Bao from the Jin Dynasty (1161-1190), the Hong Wu Tong Bao from the Ming Dynasty (1328-1398), and the Ying Luo Tong Bao from the Ming Dynasty (1360-1424)…
