American researchers have developed a device capable of combating terrorism: it can detect explosive particles as small as a few nanograms.
R. Graham Cooks, the lead researcher from Purdue University, stated that this advanced technology can be utilized to ensure security in public areas around the world.
“In the time it takes for a person to take a breath, this device can ‘smell’ the surface of an object in luggage and determine whether there are any dangerous substances inside, based on the residual chemicals left by the individual who placed the explosives when they touched the luggage,” Cooks said.
According to the research team, this device is particularly useful for inspecting suspicious luggage at airports, train stations, and other locations where incidents have occurred in the past. Because this technology can operate on various surfaces like skin and clothing, it can also help identify whether someone is carrying hazardous chemicals.
