A kayaker was fortunate to spot a rare angel shark off the coast of Ireland.
Recently, The Sun reported that Colin O’Loan, who was kayaking with a group of children and another instructor from the Galway Bay Sailing Club, shared a special video with his followers on the evening of May 28. It was the moment Colin O’Loan encountered the rare shark at Rinville, Ireland.
The angel shark is one of the rarest species in Europe.
Many locals and Twitter users quickly commented after watching the incredible footage.
Colin also recounted that at first, he thought it was a ray. However, when he got home and reviewed the video, he realized it was a rare marine creature. It was an angel shark.
The national agency for marine research, development, and innovation in Ireland stated that the angel shark is one of the rarest species in Europe. It is listed as “critically endangered” in the Irish Red List for cartilaginous fish.
They added: “From the exciting scenes in Rinville, we are thrilled to confirm the sighting of one of the rarest shark species in Europe.”
The Inland Fisheries Authority of Ireland further noted: “Angel sharks are bottom-dwelling creatures found in coastal waters near shore and can be found at depths of 5-150m. This nocturnal species hides in mud or sand during the day.”
