Farmers in England recently reported that this year’s Halloween will see an unusual harvest of large pumpkins.
Pumpkins thriving due to the rain.
“The wet months of July and August following a hot June have created ‘perfect’ conditions for growing pumpkins.
While July and August’s rain may not be ideal for sun lovers or barbecue enthusiasts, for farmers like us, pumpkins have thrived thanks to the rain,” expressed the pumpkin farmers in England with joy.
“This Halloween, the main varieties of pumpkins are expected to be larger than usual,” said Steve Whitworth, Commercial Director at Oakley Farms, located near Wisbech in Cambridgeshire.
“The weather has given us just the right amount of rain along with special sunny periods, especially compared to the challenging conditions we faced during last year’s heatwave – officially the hottest year on record in England,” added Steve Whitworth.
Oakley Farms reportedly grows around 5 million pumpkins each year, making it one of the largest pumpkin suppliers in Europe.
Lucy Moss, the purchasing manager for Tesco, where Oakley Farms supplies pumpkins, stated: “This year, pumpkins will be larger than usual across all sizes. We anticipate that pumpkins for Halloween enthusiasts will be the most popular this year.”
However, it is noted that last year, the number of people searching for pumpkin recipes increased tenfold. This data was collected from the Tesco Real Food website.
“This is good news; we should not waste food,” said Lucy Moss.
