Despite the rapid advancements in processing speed, memory capacity, and new technologies like Wi-Fi and the Web, the design of personal computers today remains strikingly similar to that of the Apple Lisa from a bygone era. The basic components such as the keyboard, monitor, and mouse have not changed significantly.
In an effort to revolutionize computer design, Microsoft partnered with ISDA, Dell, and HP to host a competition seeking unique ideas. The result? Nearly 200 research teams from 33 countries submitted creative prototypes to the organizers, ranging from screenless computers for the visually impaired to Response Desk—a multifunctional computer “embedded” within a desk. However, there were only two winners, whose names were announced at the recent CES exhibition.
Let’s take a look at some of the awarded ideas and a few other equally innovative initiatives from the competition:
9. Libellus Mobile PC – Finalist
Libellus draws inspiration from something universally recognized: books.
When opened, this “small book” reveals touchscreen displays that serve as its pages. The eye-catching banana-colored rubber border helps you bookmark the pages you are writing or reading. At the center of the book is a stylus that allows for easy input and also functions as a handwriting recognition tool.
10. EyeMove PC – Finalist:
The EyeMove computer represents a bold and innovative combination of computer interface and home entertainment. As shown in the image, EyeMove is an oval-shaped PC with an integrated projection lens. To operate it, you use a multifunctional wireless remote control. You can mount it vertically on a wall or lay it flat on a desk, projecting any program, movie, or game onto any surface. With this wireless remote, you can completely forget about traditional mice, keyboards, and game controllers. What remains is just a control screen, sensors, and wireless functionality.
Made from aluminum, EyeMove has minimal components and is designed to be as compact as possible. This computer is built for easy disassembly and upgrades.
Now all you have to do is choose a flat surface, project the desired content onto it, lounge on your sofa, and… enjoy life.
11. ENZO – ENtertainment ZOne
Today’s computers are akin to radios from the 1930s or televisions from the 1950s—generally fixed in one spot in the home. However, ENZO promises to liberate users with a truly mobile wireless entertainment computer. It opens up a plethora of entertainment options within a highly integrated, affordable device that requires no installation and minimal technical skills to operate.
ENZO users can easily share multimedia content with family and friends, taking the device to any corner of the house, into the garden, or even on the go.
12. Domino
As thin as a blade of grass and mountable on a wall, Domino is a computer designed to perform simple tasks such as playing a song, watching a movie, playing a game, checking the weather, or calling friends. What you see from Domino has been minimized to the essentials: a touchscreen, a CD/DVD drive, and two blue semicircles. When attached to the main unit as shown, these semicircles change color according to the images displayed on the screen, as well as the surrounding environment. When detached, each semicircle becomes a multifunctional remote control to interact with Domino.
13. E-mailbox
This project envisions traditional, worn-out mailboxes being enhanced with an electronic connection—allowing even the most remote areas to connect with the world. A meaningful initiative from a group of Indian authors.
14. PC. PET.
PC Pet is a design for a computer that has no keyboard or mouse, allowing users to interact via touch or voice. This device incorporates infrared ports, wireless Bluetooth, and touchscreen technology. With its compact size (25 x 25 x 26.8 cm), you can place the PC Pet anywhere in the house. If desired, you can detach the screen (18 cm in diameter) and carry it around the house while enjoying music, videos, and browsing the web.
15. OS[e]
A computer that is completely screenless, designed specifically for the visually impaired. However, it also meets the needs of anyone looking for an ultra-lightweight computer that is easy to carry and capable of performing basic tasks.
