The U.S. Central Bank has recently denied debit card transactions for numerous customers following indications that a card management company may have been targeted by hackers.
A spokesperson for the Bank of America (BofA) declined to provide the name of the company involved or the number of affected customers. The unusual aspect of this incident is that typically, only credit cards are targeted by hackers; however, in this case, debit cards (also known as payment cards) have come under scrutiny. Furthermore, customers generally prefer using credit cards for personal transactions rather than debit cards.
According to BofA spokesperson Michael Chee, the matter is currently under investigation, though he could not confirm whether law enforcement agencies are involved.
BofA has issued notifications to many customers regarding this issue, indicating that at this time, debit cards are no longer secure. The bank also advises customers to exercise caution and monitor their accounts for any illegal transactions.
