On the evening of October 13, the European Ariane-5 rocket launched from its launch pad in South America, successfully placing a French military satellite and a U.S. telecommunications satellite into space.
The Ariane-5 rocket ascended into the sky from the Kourou spaceport, located approximately 40 miles from the capital city of Cayenne in French Guiana. It reached an altitude of 870 miles above sea level before deploying France’s Syracuse 3A satellite into orbit nearly 30 minutes after liftoff. The U.S. Galaxy 15 satellite was also deployed about 7 minutes later, completing the launch process.
These two satellites were originally scheduled for launch at the end of September but were postponed due to technical issues.
This satellite launch marks the 167th mission of the Ariane rocket since its first operation in 1979.
