You may already know that an executable file (*.EXE) or a dynamic link library file (*.DLL) can contain multiple icons. Some of these icons are quite vivid, and you might want to use them for your own folders and files.
If you’re unsure how to extract these icons, the software Icon Collector Tool can quickly assist you with this task. After running the program, go to the menu File > Open File and select the file from which you want to extract icons.
In the main window of the program, all the icons contained in the selected file will be displayed. You can choose an icon that you like. On the right panel, the sizes of the selected icon will be shown. Select a size that suits you, right-click on it, choose Save As, then select the save location and name the file (be sure to include the .ICO extension).
Additionally, if you’re not sure which file contains the icon you want, you can use the program’s search function: go to the menu File > Open Folder, specify the folder to search, choose the format (EXE, DLL, ICO), and click the Search button.
Icon Collector Tool 1.2 is a commercial software by AtoA Software, compatible with Windows 95/98/Me/NT/2000/XP/2003. You can download a trial version at http://www.atoasoft.com/products/ict.htm (680 KB) or find it on various software compilation CDs available on the market.
