For computer users, Windows Explorer is a familiar file and folder browser. Why not make it even more personal by customizing it?
First, use Photoshop, Photo Impact, or any graphic design program to create an image sized 1024×182 pixels if your screen resolution is set to 1024×768 pixels, or 800×182 pixels if your resolution is 800×600 pixels.
Once you have finished creating your image, save it as 1024.bmp in the C:WINDOWSWeb directory. (From my experience, it’s best to design the main part of the image in the top third to achieve the best result when inserting the image. Make sure to use the correct dimensions to avoid stretching or compressing the image.)
Next, go to Start > Run and type Regedit, then hit OK. Navigate to the key “My ComputerHKEY_USERSS-1-5-21-790525478-163985344-725345543-1003SoftwareMicrosoftInternet ExplorerToolbar” (where S-1-5-21-790525478-163985344-725345543-1003 is your machine name, so these numbers may vary—just look for a similar key).
Then, double-click on the keys BackBitmap and backbitmapshell in the right pane and modify the values as follows:
“BackBitmap”=”C:\WINDOWS\Web\1024.bmp”
“backbitmapshell”=”c:\windows\web\1024.bmp”
If the keys BackBitmap and backbitmapshell do not exist, right-click, select New > String Value to create them, and set the values as indicated above.
To complete your customization, you can log off or restart your computer. Now, every time you open Explorer, you will see your “masterpiece.”
