Assessing the fluctuations of chemical and environmental factors from 1962 to the present, scientists involved in the project “Comprehensive Investigation of Natural Conditions, Resources, and Environment of the Gulf of Tonkin” valued at 8.5 billion VND have concluded that the Gulf of Tonkin “shows signs of pollution in coastal areas.”
Notably, the concentration of total suspended solids in the coastal waters is quite high. The most turbid area is at the Ba Lat Estuary, with levels ranging from 20-300 mg/l in the dry season and 50-1500 mg/l in the rainy season.
At the closing workshop of the program “Basic Investigation and Application Research in Marine Technology” held in Hanoi on July 15, the Gulf of Tonkin was assessed to have signs of metal pollution, including copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), and cadmium (Cd). The most severely affected areas are river mouths such as Ba Lat Estuary, Bach Dang River, and Luc Estuary.
