Nurse sharks (also known as Ginglymostoma cirratum) can reach lengths of 3 to 4.5 meters, weigh up to 300 kg, and live for 25 to 35 years. Although they belong to the shark family, these creatures are relatively gentle. They inhabit tropical and subtropical waters of the Pacific, Indian Oceans, as well as the Caribbean Sea. Nurse sharks are slow-moving and less active; instead of chasing prey like many other shark species, they swim close to the seafloor, using their mouths to suck in food like a vacuum cleaner. Nurse sharks play a vital role in marine ecosystems and are typically not dangerous to humans. However, if provoked in any way, their bites can be life-threatening due to their strong jaws filled with thousands of small, serrated teeth. According to reports prior to 2022, there were approximately 51 provoked attacks and 5 unprovoked attacks by nurse sharks. Currently, nurse sharks rank fourth among shark species that frequently attack humans. |
