A Russell’s viper, also known as the butterfly viper (Scientific name: Daboia russelii), is one of the four highly venomous snake species in the “Big Four” group of India. However, they often become prey for another member of this group.
This member is the Indian cobra (Scientific name: Naja naja), a snake that commonly preys on other snakes due to its immunity to their venom. Therefore, even if bitten by a butterfly viper, the cobra remains unharmed.
In contrast, the venom of the cobra can paralyze its prey, which ultimately leads to the death of the venomous snake at the hands of the cobra. Besides the cobra, another snake in the “Big Four” that frequently preys on the butterfly viper is the Indian krait (Scientific name: Bungarus caeruleus).
