The Taklamakan Desert, also known as the Taklimakan Desert or the Tháp Khắc Lạp Mã Can, is a desert located in Central Asia, within the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of the People’s Republic of China. It is bounded by the Kunlun Mountains to the south and the Pamir and Tian Shan mountains (historically known as the Imeon Mountains) to the west and north.

Taklamakan is recognized as one of the largest deserts in the world, ranking 15th in size among the largest non-polar deserts globally. It covers an area of 270,000 km² of the Tarim Basin, extending approximately 1,000 km in length and 400 km in width. The northern and southern edges of this desert host two branches of the Silk Road, which travelers historically sought to navigate to avoid the arid wasteland.
