The ACMECS Summit Concludes with Concrete Outcomes in Investment and Cooperation
The summit of the five countries within the Ayeyawady – Chao Phraya – Mekong Economic Cooperation Strategy (ACMECS) concluded yesterday in Bangkok, achieving tangible results regarding investment and cooperation.
Host Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra welcomed Vietnam’s participation in the ACMECS Summit for the first time. The five member countries of ACMECS signed a comprehensive cooperation declaration to combat avian influenza.
During the summit, Vietnam and Thailand agreed to collaborate in education as part of human resource development, while also assisting the other three countries—Laos, Cambodia, and Myanmar—in higher education training. Thailand and Cambodia signed an agreement to implement a single visa policy effective from April 2006. This marks the first developmental step of the “Five Countries, One Destination” project, which allows foreign tourists to enter all five ACMECS countries with a single visa, aiming to promote tourism development in the region.
