The Laser Technology Application Center, part of the Institute of Technology Application, has successfully developed a ventilator—one of the most essential tools for treating patients with Influenza A. The price of this device is approximately one-tenth of that of imported models.
According to the Logistics Subcommittee of the National Steering Committee for SARS and Influenza A prevention, Vietnam needs thousands of ventilators to combat the influenza pandemic. In their preparedness plan, the Ministry of Health aims to purchase 1,000 of these devices. However, due to the current global demand for ventilators to prepare for potential influenza outbreaks, orders are being fulfilled slowly.
In light of this situation, the Laser Technology Application Center began research in November 2005 to produce ventilators, and they have now completed this project. According to Director Trần Ngọc Liêm, this “made in Vietnam” product is priced at 7-7.5 million VND each, which is approximately 8-10 times cheaper than European imports while still maintaining quality.
Currently, the ventilators are undergoing testing, and mass production will begin swiftly to supply healthcare facilities ahead of any potential avian influenza outbreak.
