Vietnam ranks third among pioneering countries in the rapid development of Internet connectivity, with the number of Internet users increasing by 27.48% over the past four years. This finding comes from a global survey on Internet development published by the UK-based Internet Research Fund GOV3 (Government for the Third Millennium) on November 17 during the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS).
However, according to data analysis experts, although Vietnam ranks behind Sudan and Guinea, it is evaluated more favorably than these two countries due to its better results: 7.2% of the population uses the Internet regularly, compared to Guinea’s 5.75% and Sudan’s 3.3%.
On the same day, in an official report at the WSIS conference, Minister of Post and Telecommunications Đỗ Trung Tá affirmed that Vietnam has achieved significant milestones in its journey towards an information society: 98% of communes nationwide have telephone access, nearly 10% of the population uses the Internet, and 17.5% use telephones.
Regarding Vietnam’s perspective on Internet governance, Minister Đỗ Trung Tá emphasized: The government plays a crucial role in managing the Internet, and there must be coordination and unity in ensuring cybersecurity. Internet management should be conducted with consideration for the interests and participation of various stakeholders, including governments, private sectors, and society.
