Xiaomi has unveiled its operations of a fully automated smart production line, capable of running 24/7 without human intervention, reported Interesting Engineering on July 10. In a video shared on social media platform X, Lei Jun, the CEO and founder of Xiaomi, explained how the system diagnoses and addresses issues while optimizing processes for self-evolution.
Xiaomi’s Intelligent Manufacturing Platform (IMP) acts as the operational brain, actively tackling challenges and enhancing production efficiency. “There are 11 production lines. 100% of the core processes are automated. We developed all the production software to achieve this,” Jun stated.
The video was filmed at Xiaomi’s new facility in Changping, Beijing. This site will host the next-generation smartphone manufacturing plant, which is expected to open soon. The factory’s automation system is quite sophisticated, with machines coordinating to complete tasks. A micron-sized dust collection device also ensures the factory remains clean. The company’s intelligent machines also conduct quality control. Theoretically, the facility is capable of producing one smartphone every second. Spanning 81,000 square meters, with an investment of 330 million USD, it aims to produce 10 million high-end smartphones annually.

At the core of the factory, IMP possesses self-awareness, decision-making capabilities, and self-management. This advanced platform independently diagnoses equipment issues, streamlines workflow, and allows for comprehensive digital management from raw material procurement to distribution. The factory has evolved into a truly smart facility capable of self-improvement and adaptation. Notably, the factory features 96.8% self-developed packaging equipment and 100% self-developed software, along with over 500 patents.
Since early 2019, Xiaomi has extensively integrated automation technology into its manufacturing processes. Their smart factory in Yizhuang, Beijing, is fully operational and ready for production.
