Memorandum of Understanding on Scientific Research Cooperation and Technology Deployment in the Water and Environment Sector between the Ministry of Science and Technology of Vietnam and the Federal Ministry of Education and Research of Germany (BMBF) was signed on the afternoon of October 11 in Hanoi.
The memorandum (MOU) was signed during the visit to Vietnam from October 8 to 12 by the BMBF delegation, led by Mr. Rienhard Junker, Head of the Department of Health, Life Sciences, and Sustainable Development in Germany.
The content of the memorandum reaffirms the commitment to enhance scientific research cooperation and technology transfer to promote the sustainable use of water resources, treat and restore polluted areas, particularly in coal mining regions, as well as research suitable technologies for sustainable development in Vietnam.
According to the memorandum, both parties agreed to establish an Executive Committee with the participation of relevant authorities from both countries to effectively implement the agreements.
According to assessments from Germany, Vietnam is one of the important partners in Asia, with the second-largest volume of cooperative projects in science and technology in the region, only after China. During the period from 2006 to 2010, the BMBF plans to further enhance cooperation with Vietnamese partners through the development and implementation of research programs aimed at capacity building and technology transfer.
To date, the BMBF has supported Vietnam in implementing several significant cooperative programs, notably the Vietnam-Germany Cooperation Program on Biotechnology, the Integrated Water Resource Management Program in the Mekong Delta, and the research project on pollution treatment and sustainable environmental restoration in the Quang Ninh coal mining region.
