The Tsunami Warning System Plays a Crucial Role in Mitigating Human and Property Losses During Tsunamis |
Recently, the Prime Minister has assigned the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment the responsibility of state management regarding tsunamis, including forecasting natural disaster incidents such as earthquakes and tsunamis.
The Prime Minister has also tasked the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment to work alongside the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to complete the procedures for joining the Pacific Tsunami Warning System promptly.
Furthermore, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment has been entrusted with the lead role in collaborating with the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Central Steering Committee for Flood and Storm Prevention, the National Search and Rescue Committee, the Vietnam Institute of Science and Technology, and other relevant agencies to develop a comprehensive project on a forecasting and warning network for natural environmental incidents (earthquakes, tsunamis, tropical depressions, floods, etc.) by 2010, with a vision extending to 2020.
In addition, they are to establish a coordination mechanism for forecasting and warning about earthquakes and tsunamis to be submitted to the Prime Minister by June 30, 2006.
The Vietnam Institute of Science and Technology has been assigned by the Prime Minister to coordinate with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment to work with the Ministry of Planning and Investment and other agencies, countries, and international organizations to develop a project proposal aimed at enhancing research capabilities for tsunami and earthquake warning and forecasting. This initiative aims to significantly reduce damages caused by natural disasters and ensure timely integration with regional and global standards.
