On May 9, during the 45th anniversary celebration of the Vietnam Institute of Medicinal Materials, the Director of the Institute, Nguyen Thuong Dong, announced that the Institute has successfully synthesized testosterone and progesterone (male and female hormones) from a domestic herb known as lobster grass.
From lobster grass, the Institute has successfully extracted diosgenin and buscopan, which in turn allowed for the synthesis of testosterone and progesterone for treating endocrine-related conditions or for use in skincare products.
With these raw materials, Vietnam will soon produce and market a contraceptive and skincare product for women that are 100% “made in Vietnam”.
According to Mr. Dong, the domestic pharmaceutical industry has a significant demand for these raw materials, and at various times, the market has faced shortages of these ingredients.
