On April 11, Professor Dr. Tran Quan Anh, Director of the Male Health Center at Viet Duc Hospital, announced that the center successfully performed the first vas deferens and epididymis reconnection surgery at the hospital for a male patient.
The patient, N.A.Q., a 33-year-old driver residing in Dai La, Hanoi, has been married for over four years but has not had children.
Upon examination, doctors analyzed his semen and found no sperm. However, during the aspiration of the epididymis, which stores sperm, mature sperm was discovered.
This indicates that sperm is still being produced, but the vas deferens and epididymis are blocked, preventing the sperm from being released.
Professor Dr. Tran Quan Anh affirmed that patients like Mr. Q. can be fully treated through surgical methods. A month and a half after the vas deferens and epididymis reconnection, test results showed that the sperm count, which was previously zero, had risen to 3 million sperm/ml. With this sperm count, Mr. Q. can become a father.
It is known that the cost of a vas deferens and epididymis reconnection surgery at Viet Duc Hospital is 3.5 million VND. In contrast, similar surgeries in countries like the United States or Singapore can cost around 4,000 USD.
