This 5-second clip showcases just how “incredible” the speed of an airplane in the sky can be!
As children, we often look up at planes flying across the sky and wonder why they seem to be… flying so slowly. The vast distance can make it appear as though airplanes are just “floating” in the air. In reality, however, they travel at much higher speeds than that.
Recently, a foreign pilot shared a video on TikTok that captures the view from his cockpit. In just 6 short seconds, you can see another airplane zooming by at an astonishing speed, flying at a lower altitude.
This strange moment occurs only when two airplanes are moving towards each other in the sky. At that moment, you will see one plane rushing past very quickly. Meanwhile, sitting on an airplane and looking out the window, or standing on the ground, most people perceive everything as moving quite slowly, “deceiving” our vision.

Yet when we look up at the sky, we almost always see airplanes floating slowly.
Even when looking out the airplane window, most travelers see the scenery below as tiny and drifting slowly in front of them. Our vision is “deceived” because airplanes are flying at a very high altitude.
Most commercial airplanes today are equipped with jet engines, which operate best at speeds ranging from 640 to 965 km/h (approximately 400 to 600 mph). They typically do not fly faster because it would waste a lot of fuel and may not be safe. Some types of non-passenger aircraft can reach speeds of up to 2400 km/h (approximately 1500 mph). These are truly astounding figures!
Most commercial airplanes today can fly at speeds of about 640 to 965 km/h. Meanwhile, some other types of non-passenger aircraft can reach speeds of thousands of km/h.
