Two Eczema Creams Now Required to Carry Cancer Warning Labels
As of January 19, manufacturers and regulators in the U.S. announced that two eczema creams, Novartis AG’s Elidel and Astellas Pharma’s Protopic, will now be sold with a prominent “black box” warning—the strongest warning label used in the United States. This decision comes ten months after the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued its initial warning call.

The FDA stated that while a clear link between these medications and cancer risk has not been established, there have been enough reports of cancer associated with these products to warrant this change. A total of 78 cases related to both products have been reported up until October 2005.
Additionally, the product labeling will include changes indicating that both medications should only be used after other treatments have been attempted. The labels also specify that these creams are not to be used in children under two years of age.
